BIOLOGIST II – UPLAND GAME

North Dakota Game and Fish Department

Salary Range: $4,260-$5,680/month hiring range; $4,260-$7,100 full range

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or wildlife management, or closely related natural resource science degree and four years of professional work experience with a wildlife or natural resource management agency is required.  A Master’s of Science degree may be substituted for two years of actual work experience.

The position requires extensive knowledge of wildlife and population management, wildlife habitat needs, and life cycle ecology, particularly for upland game species.  Applicants must be able to communicate effectively both orally and written with wildlife management professionals, the media and the public.  Applicants need to possess strong organizational and project coordination skills and work independently on multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines.  Applicant must be able to work collaboratively with others on cooperative projects and to resolve problems.

Must have or be able to obtain a Class D North Dakota driver’s license. Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds, and be willing to travel extensively.

Requires satisfactory completion of a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Preference will be given for:

  • Experience in wildlife management, surveys and analysis of survey data, particularly with upland game species
  • Experience designing and conducting wildlife research and publishing the results
  • Experience planning, creating or developing, and/or managing wildlife habitat
  • Supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of database management and SAS
  • Working knowledge and experience using GPS, GIS and ArcView or related GIS Software, especially for spatial modeling
  • Actively participating in upland game bird hunting

Summary of Work: Responsible for supervision, budgeting, grants and management of the Upland Game  Management Section, including supervision of the upland game bird biologist and hiring and supervision of numerous temporary and seasonal staff.  Directly responsible for the research and management programs for partridge, pheasant, turkey, ruffed grouse, prairie grouse, cottontail rabbits and tree squirrels.  Develop recommendations for upland game hunting seasons and management programs.  Plan, coordinate, supervise and conduct surveys to determine the status of and harvest of all upland game, including compiling and analyzing data and writing reports.  Develop and conduct upland game surveys and research projects that are designed to contribute to knowledge of annual production, hunter harvest success, and seasonal population indices to aid in the setting of harvest season lengths and bag limits for all upland game species.  Maintain extensive upland game databases, records, files and literature.  Actively participate in local, regional, national and international committees and working groups for species of responsibility.  Coordinate with state, regional, national and international wildlife agencies and organizations on upland game population and habitat programs.  Coordinate with and advise Department leadership and staff on upland game populations, habitat and management issues and related wildlife issues.  Participate in other departmental wildlife surveys and management programs.

Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a biological or wildlife specialty or statistics, and three years of professional work experience.  A Master’s degree may be substituted for two years of actual work experience.  (If you are PhD Candidate, please list your research assistant work in your Job History.)

The position requires broad knowledge of surveys and statistical methods used in the study of wildlife resources.  Applicants must have experience conducting mail or electronic surveys, including statistically appropriate sampling, designing survey instruments, and data capture and analyses.  Applicants must be able to maintain extensive databases, records and files.  Applicants must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with wildlife management professionals, the media and the public.  Applicants need to possess strong organizational skills and work independently on multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines.  Applicant must be able to work collaboratively with others on cooperative projects and to resolve problems.

Summary of Work:

This position is within the Wildlife Division of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the employee also serves as a team member of the Game Management Section.  This section is responsible for conducting a wide variety of surveys, research and management activities for big game, upland game, furbearers, migratory game birds, and wildlife diseases in North Dakota.  This is not your typical Biologist position.  The successful candidate will be the primary source for sound statistical survey design related to conducting and evaluating the aforementioned and other Department programs.  This includes working independently and providing direction to Administration and other Department staff on appropriate survey methods and courses of action.

Examples of work include:

  • Conducting mail and electronic surveys related to harvest of wildlife.
  • Conducting survey analyses and providing summaries of results.
  • Coordinate with other Department biologists on development, evaluation, and modification of harvest surveys.
  • Performing data quality checks and maintaining data integrity.
  • Responding to data requests, including extraction and formatting of data from many sources.
  • Providing critical review of survey methodology and presenting recommendations both orally and in writing.
  • Conducting data entry.
  • Participating in other Departmental wildlife surveys and management programs.
